Arkansas: Cotton to CIA? US Sen. Tom Cotton (R), a staunch conservative and foreign policy hawk, may be slated to head the Central Intelligence Agency. That’s according to both the New York Times and the Washington Post, who cited unnamed White House sources. The move would be part of a shakeup that would oust Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and replace him with CIA director Mike Pompeo, leaving the CIA post to be filled by Cotton. Joe Barton (R), plagued by disclosures of “sexting” and of sexual harassment, has announced that he will not seek reelection, reports Roll Call. Barton is the dean of theTexas delegation and is in his 34th year in the House ……. South Carolina: Clyburn compares Susan Smith case to Conyers. US Rep. Jim Clyburn (D), the third ranking Democrat in the House, in comments to the Congressional Black Caucus, reportedly compared US Rep. John Conyers’ (D-MI) harassment case with that of Susan Smith, who was convicted of killing her two children, then blaming the crime on a black man. Robert Draper, a writer with the New York Times Magazine, tweeted, “James Clyburn compared Conyers’ accusers to the child murderer Susan Smith… Clyburn said these are all white women who’ve made these charges against Conyers.” Clyburn says his comments have been taken out of context, but there has been considerable negative reaction to his alleged remarks in the Palmetto State, reports The State newspaper.
