National ACORN squabbling with Louisiana branch

By Gary Reese

October 14, 2009

Both sides insist that criticism earlier this week of President Obama wasn’t the main reason for Tuesday’s firing of Louisiana ACORN Beth Butler, but comments from the national ACORN office both before and after the firing hint otherwise. A local volunteer in New Orleans had criticized the itinerary of Obama for not including a visit to the Lower Ninth Ward.

Ten percent more Virginians oppose President Obama’s position on healthcare than support it, according to a new poll by the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Those against “Obamacare” appear to be on the rise in this bellwether political state, as do those who disapprove of the president’s overall performance.

The city of Houston will be “on trial” in the US Supreme Court. The high court Tuesday agreed to consider two arguments by the legal defense team of former Enron CEO Jeff Skilling. One of his lawyers’ two arguments before the court will be whether it was impossible for Skilling to have received a fair trial in Enron’s headquarter city of Houston. Media coverage of the trial there was intense, and some say prejudicial to the jury.

A joint investigation of the Florida state Public Service Commission by a state attorney and the state police has uncovered no wrongdoing, according to law enforcement officials. A report in September by the St. Pete Times and the Miami Herald said that PSC staffers had given BlackBerry message codes to Florida Power & Light officials on more than one occasion during PSC proceedings.
