New IA poll: Georgia Democratic governor's race

Compiled from InsiderAdvantage and Southern Political Report staff

April 7, 2010Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes has an early commanding lead over three other candidates in the race for the Democratic nomination for governor. Here are the results of the latest poll from InsiderAdvantage and WSB-TV/Atlanta:  Roy Barnes: 47%Thurbert Baker: 18%David Poythress: 6%Dubose Porter: 5%Undecided/No opinion: 24%

The poll was conducted by InsiderAdvantage on April 6 among 301 likely voters in the Georgia Democratic primary for governor. The margin of error is 6%. The data have been weighted for age, race, gender and political affiliation.

All InsiderAdvantage surveys are conducted using IVR automated technology. This technology helped make InsiderAdvantage one of the most accurate pollsters in the nation in the 2008 presidential race, and allowed IA to poll the 2009 Atlanta mayor’s race runoff to within .7% of the election’s outcome.

Analysis from InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery:

“Roy Barnes continues to enjoy his strong name ID among voters. He could easily win the primary race without a runoff. But there are two flies in the ointment for Barnes. First, the greatest share of African-American support that he is now the beneficiary of could shift if Thurber Baker [an African-American] were to have a significant presence on TV.

Second, right now it appears that enthusiasm among voters for the Democratic primary will be much lower than for the Republican primary. This could make the Democratic race much more difficult to win without a runoff.”
