South Carolina latest to pass illegal immigration bill

A bill that requires police in South Carolina to check suspects' immigration status and mandates that all businesses check their hires through a federal online system received final legislative approval Tuesday.

-- Beware, Florida Republicans: The tea party movement that swept you into office in 2010 could cost you the next election. ... That’s the takeaway message from Republican pollster and consultant Alex Patton, who conducted a recent survey showing that, by a 2:1 ratio, registered Florida voters said the tea party movement did not represent their views.

-- As a Republican state senator who secretly recorded conversations for the FBI testified Thursday that he couldn’t explain why he called black customers of a casino “aborigines,” Alabama’s Democrat leader called for his resignation and the Republican Party chairman defended his reputation.

-- Defense officials, the commercial fishing industry and the Virginia Port Authority said Wednesday they all have interests that need to be considered during the siting of wind turbines in waters off the coast.

-- Fewer companies got tax breaks tailored specifically for them during the North Carolina Legislature's first session under Republican control in 140 years, but that didn't mean enticements for favored firms to create jobs went out the window.
