2014: Three runoffs in Louisiana: On December 6, US Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) faces Bill Cassidy (R). In the 5th District (Monroe, etc.), voters will choose between Jamie Mayo (D) and Ralph Abraham (R) in a congressional runoff. And in the 6th District (Baton Rouge, etc.), the runoff for Congress is between Edwin Edwards (D) – remember him? – and Garrett Graves (R). Republicans are favored in all three elections.
2015: Three races for governor in the South. Kentucky, Louisiana and Mississippi all elect governors next year. Kentucky’s Gov. Steven Beshear (D) is term-limited, as is Louisiana’s Gov. Bobby Jindal (R). In Mississippi, however, Gov. Phil Bryant (R) is eligible to seek a second term.
2016: No Southern Democratic senate seats at stake. While Republicans won two additional US Senate seats in the South this year (AR & NC), and are expected to win a third (LA), in 2016 not a single Southern Democratic senator will be on the ballot. Meanwhile, eight Republican senate seats will be up in a presidential year when Democratic turnout is likely to be higher. Stay tuned!
