Virginia: McAuliffe meets Cuban envoy. Last week Jose Cabanas, chief of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, was in Richmond where he talked potential trade opportunities forVirginia businesses with Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D). Cabanas also met with business groups “seeking closer ties” to Cuba, reports the Washington Post ……. North Carolina: Ex-Democrat joins GOP caucus. As the two-party system has solidified in the South, there have been fewer incidents of party-switching, but last week Democratic state Rep. Paul Tine of Kitty Hawk switched to “unaffiliated,” and by week’s end had been invited to caucus with the Republicans, albeit as an independent ……. Movers: South leads in newcomers. A survey by United Van Lines of folks moving from and to states found that three of the five most popular destinations from those moving out-of-state were in the South.
