Florida/Kentucky: Rubio, Paul clash on surveillance. Two prominent Republicans, both presidential candidates, are taking opposite stands on reauthorizing the National Security Agency and the Patriot Act. US Sen. Marco Rubio (FL) says the NSA’s surveillance program is necessary to protect the safety of Americans, reports The Hill. Meanwhile, US Sen. Rand Paul (KY) is threatening to filibuster the measure, because of its intrusion on citizens’ privacy ……Texas: Legislators work to bar gay marriages. A bill that would bar local officials from granting marriage licenses to same-sex couples has been introduced in the Texas House of Representative. The measure is an attempt to “send a powerful message” to the US Supreme Court, reports the Washington Post. More than half of the representatives have signed on to the bill ……. Louisiana: Landrieu advising Waltons. Former US Sen. Mary Landrieu (D) has accepted a job as a “strategic advisor” to the Walton Family Foundation, established by the late Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, and his wife Helen.
