Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, 2012 presidential candidate, commentator and author is joining the Dentons law firm as senior advisor with its Public Policy and Regulation Practice, McKenna Long & Aldridge Chairman Jeff Haidet told InsiderAdvantage. The one-time Georgia congressman’s decision to join Dentons follows two recent announcements about the firm’s expansion— its merger with McKenna Long & Aldridge as well as with a large Chinese firm.
Gordon Giffin, former U.S. ambassador to Canada who chairs the firm’s Public Policy and Regulation Practice, is excited about the Gingrich addition. “We are trying to collect the extraordinary talent on public policy available in the country to serve our clients for problem-solving in business, law, regulation and policy,” Giffin says. “No matter what your political party, he is one of the leading policy thinkers for the past 25 years.”
Giffin notes that Gingrich joins an overall McKenna team which includes former Vermont Gov. and Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean; Eric Tanenblatt, who served in the administrations of Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush; Ron Kaufman, former White House political director for President George H. W. Bush; Tharon Johnson, who headed President Barack Obama’s southeastern presidential campaign; Randy Evans, a Gingrich attorney and Georgia GOP National Committeeman and others. Over the course of this year they will be joining a Dentons team which includes Bill McCollum, former Florida attorney general and Joe Andrew, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and other high-profile international leaders.
“But even though we are a global firm,” Giffin says about himself, Gingrich and his other Atlanta colleagues, “our roots are still in Georgia.” “I met Newt while working for (former U.S. Sen.) San Nunn when he first started running for Congress and came in contact with him when he was a rising Republican star in the 1980s. And I’ve always had a lot of respect for his thinking on public policy.”
‘Newt and Dentons are a perfect match,” says InsiderAdvantage founder Matt Towery. “Dentons is a groundbreaking global law firm and Newt Gingrich is a person who has a unique understanding of America and its place in the world. And knowing personally both Newt and so many McKenna professionals who are part of the Dentons merger, I have no doubt that this will be an extremely successful enterprise. It really is quite amazing.”
