Florida: Nelson to have surgery today. US Sen. Bill Nelson (D) is undergoing surgery in Washington, DC, for prostate cancer today, reported Roll Call. Nelson, who is 72, issued a statement saying, “I look forward to continuing serving our country and Florida.” He plans, his office said, to seek reelection in 2018 ……. Virginia: McDonnell loses appeal. A three-judge federal panel has affirmed the conviction of former Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) on public corruption charges. Although other avenues of appeal are open to McDonnell, he will probably begin serving his two-year prison sentence soon, reports the Washington Post ……. Georgia: Lewis calls for review of Confederate symbols. US Rep. John Lewis (D) said last week that “it would be fitting and appropriate that, at some level, that the leadership should take a look at the symbols, statues and others in the Capitol,” reported the Washington Post. Lewis’s statement came after the House leadership postponed a vote on Interior Department funding which forbade the display of Confederate symbols in federal veterans’ cemeteries.
