Florida: Webster gets support. In the fast-moving – and fast-changing – contest for speaker of the House, long-shot contender Dan Webster (R) got a couple of boosts last week. The House Freedom Caucus, home to the GOP’s most conservative members, endorsed Webster, as did several more Florida representatives, Ted Yoho and David Jolly ……. Louisiana: Edwards leads governor’s race. In a survey taken by JMC Analytics, John Bel Edwards, the lone Democrat in a four-way gubernatorial contest, has taken the lead, with 28%, followed by the strongest Republican, US Sen. David Vitter, with 19%. The other GOPers, Scott Angelle and Jay Dardenne, had 8% and 7%, respectively ……. North Carolina: Ellmers denies rumor. US Rep. Renee Ellmers (R) thanked the members of the GOP Conference for their support in the face of “completely false accusations and innuendo” that she and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R) had an affair. The rumors gained currency when US Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) sent a letter to colleagues urging that any speaker candidates guilty of “misdeeds” to step down …….
