Virginia: Webb drops out; may run as independent. Former US Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), who served as Secretary of the Navy under President Reagan and later was elected a US Senator as a Democrat, announced yesterday that he will abandon his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. He added that he will explore running as an independent. “Americans don’t like the extremes to which both parties have moved in recent years and, quite frankly, neither do I,” he said, reports Reuters ……. Arkansas: Cotton wants Cheney for House Speaker. US Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), a confirmed foreign policy hawk, said last week that he favors an outsider for House Speaker, namely former Vice-President Dick Cheney, also a hawk, reports Newsmax. Cheney, while unlikely to seek the job or to get it, nevertheless has the advantage of having served in the House for ten years ……. North Carolina: Adams would honor Angelou. US Rep. Alma Adams (D) has introduced legislation to name the post office in Winston-Salem, much of which is in Adam’s 12th District, after Maya Angelou, a poet of national fame as well as an activist. Every member of the state’s congressional delegation is cosponsoring the bill …….
