Around the South for Nov. 5: VA, MS & TX

Virginia: State Senate stays in Republican hands. Despite major organizational and financial efforts led by Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), the Democrats failed to defeat a single Republican state senator, leaving the upper chamber in GOP hands, to McAuliffe’s detriment in the last two years of his term ……. Mississippi: Bryant reelected. It was no surprise, but Gov. Phil Bryant (R) easily defeated his unknown opponent, Robert Gray (D), by 66% to 34%. The GOP also expanded its majority in the state House of Representatives. Democrats, however, reelected popular state Attorney General Jim Hood (D) by 56% to 44% ……. Texas: Houston rejects gay rights measure. By a vote of 61% to 39%, Houston voters turned down a proposition which would have banned bias in city services and public accommodations based on “gender identity.”  …….
