Ted Cruz raised nearly $20 million in the fourth quarter of 2015, the Texas senator’s highest total to date as a presidential candidate, according to his campaign, a reflection of the momentum he is enjoying in Iowa and in some national polls.

His total for the year is more than $45 million, campaign manager Jeff Roe said in a memo to staff.

Last quarter, Cruz trailed several GOP candidates in fundraising, pulling in $12.2 million but reported more cash on hand than anyone in the Republican field. Since the start of the fourth quarter, Cruz has surged in the polls, particularly in Iowa, where he is currently the poll leader, and his fundraising numbers mirror that bounce.

“That’s a 66 percent increase over the quarter before,” Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler said on CNN on Wednesday night. “The reason that’s important is, there’s been very few campaigns that raise that money historically. We have evangelical support, we have tea party support, we’ve consolidating the broad spectrum of conservative base … and now we’ve proven we’ve got the fundraising to go the distance.”
