Donald Trump has won the Mississippi Republican primary, according to three television networks.
Trump’s first win of the night continues his winning streak across the South, following victories in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Tuesday’s outcome is a blow to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who had courted Mississippi’s voters aggressively, visiting the state most recently on Monday. Cruz had the endorsement of Gov. Phil Bryant and state lawmaker Chris McDaniel, who mounted a failed insurgent bid against Sen. Thad Cochran in 2014.
Trump visited Mississippi at least twice, holding a rally on Monday night at Madison Central High School, and a Jan. 2 rally in Biloxi. He had the support of a handful of local lawmakers, as well as civil rights activist Charles Evers and business leader Wirt Yerger III.
