Virginia: Supremes overturn McDonnell conviction. Although Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. called the facts of the case “tawdry,” he said the “broader legal implications of the government’s boundless interpretation of the federal bribery statute” was the proper focus for the high court in its 8-0 ruling reversing a lower court’s 2014 conviction of former Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) on corruption charges. McDonnell said “my family and I rejoice and give thanks” for the decision. Although a new trial is possible, it probably isn’t likely ……. Texas: Supremes reject abortion clinic regulations. In a 5-3 ruling, the Supreme Court struck down a Texas statute that placed new requirements on clinics that perform abortions. “There was no significant health-related problem that the new law helped to cure,” Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the majority ……. Tennessee: Corker hits Obama on Brexit. US Sen. Bob Corker (R), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said the US and the United Kingdom will likely grow closer since the Brexit vote. Corker, appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, was critical of President Obama’s pre-vote comments on the issue. “To make comments about [the United Kingdom] going to the back of the queue [was] sort of sophomoric … to make something very, very good come out of this, that’s my goal.” …….
