Tennessee: Trump’s messages dominate primaries. Republican congressional candidates in the 4th (Sewanee, etc.) and 8th (Memphis suburbs, etc.) are stressing themes that Donald Trump used to win the GOP presidential nomination, reports The Tennessee Journal. In the open 8th, David Kustoff’s TV spots lament that the nation is descending into “chaos and lawlessness.” And in the 8th, incumbent Scott DesJarlais faces well-financed Grant Starrett, who is emphasizing “politically correct cowards” who are soft on radical Muslims. The primary is Aug. 4 ……. North Carolina: Federal judges strike down voting law. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals last week declared unconstitutional the state’s GOP-enacted voting rights law. The federal 3-judge panel contended its provisions, including a photo-ID requirement, eliminating same-day registration and reducing the period of early voting, was aimed at black voters …….Florida: Will Wasserman Schultz eke it out? In the 23rd District (Ft. Lauderdale, etc.),US Rep. – and ex-DNC chair – Debbie Wasserman Schultz faces a well-financed ($2.3 million raised) challenge from Bernie Sanders-backer Tim Canova. Most observers, reports The Hill, believe she will win by a slim margin. Big question: Will Bernie campaign for Canova? The primary is Aug. 30 …….
