Virginia: McAuliffe chides state justices. Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), in a radio interview on Monday, said that the four state Supreme Court justices who voted against his executive order granting voting rights to felons were “scared” of the Republican leaders in the General Assembly “and wrote an opinion that made absolutely no sense,” reported the Richmond Times-Dispatch ……. Tennessee: Speaker Harwell gets a challenge. State Rep. Jimmy Matlock (R), a five-term lawmaker from East Tennessee, has announced he will challenge state House Speaker Beth Harwell (R), who assumed the post in 2010. Matlock called Harwell “a wonderful lady,” but said it is time for a reset, reports The Tennessean. Harwell survived a 2014 challenge by a vote of 57 to 15 ……. Texas: Secession redux? The latest Public Policy Polling survey found that 26% of the state’s likely voters are in favor of Texas seceding from the United States and becoming a separate nation; 59% are against secession and 15% aren’t sure.
