Florida: Buchanan in new investigatory role. US Rep. Vern Buchanan (R) has been named chairman of the oversight subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, a position in which he will have the power to investigate key government programs, including the IRS, healthcare, Medicare and Social Security, reports Sunshine State News. Buchanan said he intends “to make sure these programs are accountable and working for the people.” ……. Louisiana: Edwards honors law enforcement. Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) declared Monday Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, signing a “blue lives matter” law making attacks on police officers a hate crime. He also used spotlights to color the governor’s mansion blue ……. Texas: Legislature still white and male. A tabulation by the Texas Tribune found that the legislature is almost two-thirds white, compared with 43% of the state’s population. By party, 91% of Democrats are people of color (blacks and Latinos) compared with 4.5% of Republicans. Women make up 50% of the state’s population and 20% of legislators …….
