Tennessee: Corker announces Tillerson’s confirmation. US Sen. Bob Corker (R), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, yesterday announced the Senate’s confirmation of Rex Tillerson to be secretary of state. Corker said Tillerson “understands the critical role of US leadership.” Tillerson, former CEO of Exxon-Mobil, was confirmed by a Senate vote of 56 to 43, largely along party lines ……. NC: Burr, Tillis praise Gorsuch nomination. In statements that reflect the sentiments of most Southern Republicans, Tar Heel US Sens. Richard Burr (R) and Thom Tillis (R) released positive assessments of Supreme Court nominee Neill Gorsuch. Noting that Gorsuch had been confirmed to the US Court of Appeals in 2006 without opposition, Burr said Gorsuch “will continue to operate in accordance with the rule of law and respect for the Constitution.” Tillis called Gorsuch “an incredibly qualified and mainstream choice.” ……. Texas: Koch network opposes Trump travel and refugee orders. At a California gathering of wealthy donors to the Koch brothers’ network, officials called President Trump’s executive orders on refugees and immigrants “the wrong approach.” More broadly, billionaire Charles Koch, who declined to support Trump in last year’s campaign, said, “We have a tremendous danger because we can go the authoritarian route … or we can move toward a free and open society.” ……
