Around the South for August 1st: SC, NC, & TX

South Carolina: Plug pulled on nuclear plant.  Following the bankruptcy of lead contractor Westinghouse and faced with delays and cost overruns, South Carolina decided to pull the plug on its project to build a new nuclear reactor.  North Carolina: Voter registration up.  A new report shows voter registration up 5% in the state from four years ago – an increase of nearly 300,000.  The counties containing Charlotte and Raleigh unsurprisingly saw the most growth.  Texas: State cracks down on voter fraud.  The Texas Senate last week passed a bill looking to crack down on mail-in voter fraud, an issue in some local counties.  In Dallas last year a city council race featured hundreds of suspicious ballots and a man was eventually indicted for fraudulently filling out ballots.
