Virginia: Polls show close governor’s race. It’s 46.4% for Ralph Northam (D), 44.5% for Ed Gillespie (R), according to the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls in tomorrow’s gubernatorial election, an election with major implications for the future directions of both national parties ……. Kentucky: McConnell adds four appeals court judges. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), often under fire from Steve Bannon’s allies in the GOP, has added “a quartet of solidly conservative judges to the federal appeals courts,” reports the Washington Post. Those are the courts just below the Supreme Court, “with a final say on most litigation.” ……. Texas: Smith stepping down. US Rep. Lamar Smith (R) announced last week that he will not seek reelection next year. Smith, 69, has represented the 21st District (San Antonio, etc.) for 30 years. He chairs the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. In his retirement announcement, Smith said, “I hope to find other ways to stay involved in politics.” ……
