Georgia: Lewis to boycott state of union speech. US Rep. John Lewis, the House Democrats’ Senior Chief Deputy Whip and the dean of the Peach State’s congressional delegation, will be the highest ranking Democrat who will not be attending President Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night. He will be joined by at least one other Southern Democrat, US Rep. Frederico Wilson (FL). State House Speaker Richard Corcoran (R) has not announced that he is running for governor, but that hasn’t stopped his political committee for spending some $95,000 for a week’s worth of ads on Fox News, reports Politico. Corcoran, who isn’t likely to officially join the race until March when the legislature will adjourn, has been taking potshots at US Rep. Ron DeSantis (R), who will be targeting the same “Fox News crowd” as Corcoran ……. Tennessee: Haslam announces opioid proposal. Gov. Bill Haslam (R) last week announced at the state Capitol that he wants to spend $30 million in an “aggressive and comprehensive” program to combat opioid addiction, which caused more deaths in Tennessee last year than automobile accidents, reports The Tennessee Journal.
