Florida: Rooney retiring. US Rep. Tom Rooney (R) announced that he will not seek reelection this year. “[I]t’s time to ‘hang’em up’ as my old football coach used to say,” he said. Rooney, 47, has been mentioned as a candidate for higher office and he did say, “I look forward to serving Florida again in the future in different capacity,” reported Sunshine State News. Although Rooney never endorsed Donald Trump, Rooney and Trump each carried his district with 62% of the vote ……. Alabama: Former Miss America running for Congress. Mallory Hagan, who won the Miss America title in 2013 and Miss New York in 2012, moved back to Alabama, where she finished high school and college, reports the Washington Post, and will run as a Democrat against US Rep. Mike Rogers (R). Rogers, who has been in office for 15 years, won reelection in 2016 with 67% of the vote ……. Texas: Caraway asks NRA to move its convention. Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway has asked the National Rifle Association to move its early May convention to another host city, saying the gun lobby would be “met with opposition” after the Parkland school shooting in Florida, reports the New York Daily News. Caraway continued, “The NRA needs to step up to the plate, and they need to show leadership.” …….
