Around the South for July 9th: VA, NC, & FL

Virigina: GOP head steps down:  In the face of a controversial Senate campaign by Corey Stewart, state GOP chairman John C. Whitbeck has resigned from his post to ‘seek other political opportunities.’  Whitbeck has been lauded for pulling the state party out of debt and onto stable footing in recent years.  North Carolina: Dems, GOP at war.  A fierce battle continues to rage in Raleigh as the Republican-majority state legislature struggles with Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.  The most recent sortie – a constitutional amendment (to be voted on in November) that would strip the governor of his power to appoint individuals to boards and commissions.  Florida: DeSantis takes lead in GOP primary.  An internal poll from the camp of Republican candidate for governor & U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis shows him with a 19-point lead over opponent Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.  While internal polls must be taken with a grain of salt, a recent endorsement from President Donald Trump seems to have given DeSantis momentum in the race.
